September 18th
Today, Vicki Bruno came to share with us about teaching to the hard of hearing.  I have always been interested in learning more about sign language, and this has been fun to learn.  Much of the time was spent on working on learning the alphabet, and some simple signs.  We also discussed different types of signing.  American Sign Language, or ASL, is considered it own language.  Pidgin Sign English, or PSE.  This is a combination of ASL and Manual English.  Then there is a third style called Manuel English, or ME.  This form is basically sign word for word English as we speak or write it.  I feel like understanding how children who are hard of hearing might feel is important when trying to teach.  I hope that as I develop as a teacher, that I will consider the needs of children who are hard of hearing.

During class today, Vicki Bruno was here again.  Once again, we discussed the hearing impaired.  We listened to a tape that illustrated how children who might have a hear imparement might hear sounds spoken at the normal speaking level.  We took a test, and I got a fifty percent.  I appreciate Vicki and the things that she is challenging me to think about with regard to my future classroom.  Knowing that every student is different, and comes to class with different needs is challenging indeed.  I am sure that the lessons I have learned will be applicable to the future students that I will have.  Being sensitive to their situation in life will help me to be the best teacher I can be.

Today, we went to Andrea Kristinas for class.  Once again we had Vickie Bruno as a guest speaker.  We enjoyed learning lots of new vocabulary in sign language.  My over all experience so far has been wonderful.  I really enjoy learning sign language.  Since my cousin is deaf, I am just soaking this information up.  I think that using sign language in the classroom will be an excellent way to incorporate another language into my classroom.  On Friday at work, I sold a truck to a man and woman whose mother was with them.  The mother was deaf, and I was able to sign my name to her.  She seemed to enjoy my efforts.  Thanks Vickie.

This was the last day that Vicki Bruno came into class as a guest speaker.  I have enjoyed learning about the different ways that hard of hearing or deaf people communicate.  I also enjoyed playing bingo.  I was the first one to black out.  I look forward to using games like this in my future classroom.
